Alliance For Change Chairman Nigel Hughes was yesterday medivaced to Trinidad where he will undergo a heart bypass operation after being hospitalized at the Caribbean Heart Institute (CHI) for three days.
The 49-year-old attorney arrived at the CHI at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Sunday. He was airlifted to the city after suffering a heart attack while in the Rupununi on Saturday. He spent Saturday night at the Aishalton Hospital.
Sources say his condition was investigated at the CHI and a severe blockage was detected in a key artery.
The plan had originally been to insert a stent into the artery to open it up but sources say that this was not possible as the blockage of that particular artery might be as much as 75%. His family was informed that he would have to undergo the bypass surgery.
Doctors over the three-day period monitored and evaluated his condition and ability to travel and yesterday gave him the go ahead. He left with his wife Cathy and will be joined by other family members shortly.
