Magistrate Judy Latchman fined a Station Street man $70,000 or an alternative of six months jail when he appeared in court on Tuesday to answer to charges that he abused and threatened his sister and another person.
The Georgetown Magistrates’ Court heard that on March 7, at 24 Station Street,Kitty, Alberto Khan allegedly made use of abusive language to Koushen Ramdin and Sabrina Seabra. It was further alleged that on the said day at the same location he made use of threatening language to Seabra, his sister.
Khan who appeared without counsel pleaded guilty to the charges when they were read to him.
Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt told the court that Khan and Ramdin are friends and that Khan habitually abused his sister. On the day in question Ramdin overheard Khan abusing Seabra and told him to stop. Khan responded that it was none of his business and further abused the man.
The police were called and Khan was arrested for the offence.
The court fined Khan $20,000 on each abusive language charge or an alternative of seven days imprisonment on each charge. He was fined $30,000, on the threatening language charge or an alternative of six months imprisonment.
In May 2011, Khan was fined $15,000 and bonded to keep the peace for two years after he admitted to assaulting, using threatening language and behaviour against Seabra.
At his arraignment before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell the man had apologised for his behaviour.
Further, Seabra had begged the court for mercy for her brother saying that they had never before had any problems and that he was a source of support to her.
