Two men were yesterday granted $80,000 bail each after they appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court; one charged with assaulting his wife and the other a night shelter resident.
The allegation against Novel Cutting, 41, is that on March 11, at John Street, Lodge, he unlawfully assaulted his wife Beverly Cutting so as to cause her actual bodily harm.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge when he was arraigned before Magistrate Judy Latchman.
Lance Corporal Renetta Bentham told the court that the defendant and the virtual complainant (VC) are husband and wife and that the defendant has a habit of verbally and physically abusing his wife. Bentham further told the court that on the day in question Cutting choked his wife resulting in abrasions to the left side of her neck.
The court also heard that on March 17, at the East La Penitence Night Shelter 42-year-old Mark Persaud unlawfully assaulted Anthony Singh so as to cause him actual bodily harm.
Persaud pleaded not guilty to the charge.
In relating the facts of the matter, Bentham told the court that Persaud allegedly dealt Singh several cuffs to his mouth causing him injuries.
The prosecution had no objection to bail in the two cases.
The men were subsequently released on bail and ordered to return to court on April 17.
