Senior Engineer at the Central Planning and Housing Authority (CH&PA), Fazal Wahab has said that the re-migrant’s housing scheme is currently in the first phase of development where the roads in the scheme are being built to facilitate access for house construction.
The roads have been surfaced with crusher run and despite a slight setback, half of the area has been completed and the contractors are working to expedite completion, a release from the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) said.
He said that the phase two will involve surfacing the roads with asphaltic concrete, construction of drains and sidewalks.
The CHPA engineer said that one of the major challenges that contribute to low occupancy levels in developing housing areas was the unavailability of electricity. He said that the Ministry of Housing is exploring collaborating with the Guyana Power and Light to supply electricity.
The scheme for overseas-based Guyanese, who would like to return to live in their own houses, is located at Providence, East Bank of Demerara, about two kilometers from the main road and is an investment of $420 M.
The Ministry of Housing has issued 300 house lots out of the 500 lots being developed. Overseas-based Guyanese can get more information and apply online by signing up for an account of the Re-migrant Scheme project at www.chpa.gov.gy .
