Fruta Conquerors beat Mahaica 5-0 courtesy of a Travis Turnel double in the 41st and 89th minutes to book their quarterfinal spot in the Mayor’s Cup tournament, in a match played on Wednesday at the GFC ground.
Opening up at a fair rate, Fruta would jump into the early lead due to a great build-up between Pernel Schultz and Turnel, as the former skipped past his marker while latching on to a one-two pass from the latter before crossing the ball into an unmarked Eon Alleyne who easily converted in the fourth minute.
Giving up the lion’s share of possession to more illustrious antagonists, Mahaica would be denied the equaliser after a great save by the Fruta custodian after he was found in a one-on-one situation with the Mahaica forward.
Mahaica was once again stopped from restoring parity to proceedings as an effective save by the Conquerors’ custodian denied the Mahaica boys during a goal mouth scramble from a corner.
Almost caught out on two separate occasions, the boys from the Tucville area would consolidate their position in the 25th with Schultz etching his name on the scorer’s sheet compliments of a simple tap-in, with the Mahaica keeper nowhere to be found. Attacking down the right side, Turnel too would add his name to the scorer’s sheet in the 42nd minute as Fruta further strengthened their grip on
The second period mirrored the first with Fruta dominating possession and Mahaica trying to create offence on the counter. The Tucville unit was again forced to call on their shot stopper as he brilliantly saved a resulting Mahaica free kick that seemed destined to nestle in the top corner, much to the appreciation of team’s fans.
Monopolizing possession, further goals by Greaves and Turnel in the 71st and 89th minutes effectively ended the contest for Mahaica.
Meanwhile, in the opening match Camptown FC overcame a one nil deficit to edge Golden Grove FC 2-1 to advance to the quarterfinal round as goals from Devon Forde and Telson McKinnon in the 90th and 96th minutes erased Rolex Glasgow’s 25th minute strike.
Mayor’s Cup action continues today at the GFC ground with two fixtures. Seawall United will engage Santos FC in the opening game from 6.30pm and Alpha ‘the Hammer’ United will oppose Uitvlugt at 8.30pm in the feature match-up.
