A policeman was yesterday released on $125,000 bail on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving in relation to an accident at Linden in January.
It is alleged that on January 16, at Amelia’s Ward Public Road, in Linden, Terry Easton, 21, drove motor car PMM 1502, in a manner dangerous to the public, causing the death of 13-year-old Seon Messiah Clement.
Easton pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Sueanna Lovell at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The boy’s father, Ian Clement, a policeman attached to the Brickdam Police Station, had said that his son was hit on the Amelia’s Ward Public Road as he was riding towards his home to collect something from his mother. Eyewitnesses said that the boy was thrown several feet away upon impact when hit by the car, said to be speeding along the road with another. He reportedly died on the spot.
Attorney Adrian Thompson, in an application for bail, told the court that his client poses no risk of flight since he resides at 98 Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara. He said his client is employed with the Guyana Police Force as a driver and is stationed at the Brickdam Police Station.
Thompson further added that Clement was the son of a police sergeant and that it was unfortunate that the incident happened. He said his client was willing to attend trial and he was prepared to lodge his passport and report to the court as it directs.
The magistrate subsequently granted Easton bail in the sum of $125,000 and he was ordered to lodge his passport.
His next court appearance will be on April 11, before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
