AFC Chairman Nigel Hughes underwent an angioplasty in Trinidad after additional tests found that his blocked artery could be cleared.
Hughes, 49, had been medivaced to Trinidad on Wednesday afternoon to undergo a heart bypass operation, after being hospitalised at the Caribbean Heart Institute (CHI) for three days.
After suffering a heart attack while in the Rupununi last Saturday, Hughes was flown back to the city and admitted to the CHI on Sunday.
Sources say his condition was investigated at the CHI and a severe blockage was detected in a key artery, but a plan to insert a stent into the artery to open it up was initially deemed not possible given the suspected extent of the blockage. His family was informed that he would have to undergo the bypass surgery.
However, a relative of Hughes yesterday told Stabroek News that on Thursday evening when an evaluation of his condition was done, he was told that there was no need for the bypass surgery and the original procedure would be done. This was done and he is now resting comfortably in hospital.
His family was told that in another few days when post-surgical tests are done and if all goes well Hughes will be able to fly home to Guyana.
Hughes sent his thanks from the twin island republic to let the Guyanese people know that he was grateful for their prayers and well wishes.
