A would-be robber is now in police custody after he was apprehended by a senior City Constabulary officer when he snatched a bag containing some $4.5 million outside the Guyana Revenue Authority, Camp Street yesterday.
The officer did not want his identity disclosed but Stabroek News understands that he was in the area when an alarm was raised by eyewitnesses to the robbery.
This newspaper was told that the victim, Cecil Gajadhar, had just transacted business at a city commercial bank and was waiting, in his vehicle, to pick up his wife who was in at the GRA office.
Three men went up to him as he sat in the car. They were armed with ice picks and one had an “unknown object” pointing from under his shirt; they demanded the bag with the money. Gajadhar surrendered the bag and the trio began running.
The officer fired a round into the air and commanded the robbers to “freeze”. The bandit with the bag dropped to the road and was arrested by the officer.
His accomplices sped off in a waiting car while he was taken to the Alberttown Police Station.
