A policeman was granted bail in the sum of $5,000 after he was charged with assault when he made an appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
It was alleged that on December 18, 2012, at Charlotte and Wellington streets, Dexter Ross, 28, unlawfully assaulted Hu Yu Nan, so as to cause him actual bodily harm.
Ross pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Alan Wilson.
Ross’ attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat made an application that his client be admitted to reasonable bail because he is a police officer and at the time of the incident he was executing his duties.
He also noted that his client has a fixed place of abode at 81 Howes and St Stephen streets.
Fung-A-Fat added that on the day in question his client saw the virtual complainant dumping garbage in the area and he told him to stop.
Counsel said the VC would habitually dump animal refuse in the area.
Fung-A-Fat claimed that the VC retaliated when the officer tried to arrest him and his client subdued him.
The magistrate then placed the defendant on $5,000 bail.
He was ordered to return to court on May 6.
