After collecting his Junior Sportsman-of-the-Year award on Saturday, Paul DeNobrega celebrated his achievement by storming to an emphatic victory in the third and final leg of the Dr. Cheddi Jagan Memorial road race on Sunday.
DeNobrega, who copped a gold medal at last year’s Junior Caribbean cycling championships in the Dominican Republic, led Delroy Hinds, Raul Leal, Junior Niles, last year’s senior road race champion, Orville Hinds and Raymond Newton into the top six.
In the 50-mile event which was staged in Essequibo, the 18-year-old star cyclist stopped the clock at two hours, 17 minutes and 59 seconds.
He also pocketed a sprint prize as did the Hinds brothers Orville (two) and Delroy (one).
Niles, Newton and Lindeners Mark Lewis and Montell Anthony, also carted off a sprint print each.
Kennard Lovell took top honours in the veterans’ category while 16-year old Leal was the first junior to cross the finish line.
Hazina Barrett pedaled off with the winner’s trophy in the female category.
Sponsors for the event included El Dorado Trading and S. Jagmohan Hardware Supplies and Construction Services.
National riders Raynauth Jeffrey and Robin Persaud won the first two legs which were staged in Berbice and on the West Demerara respectively.
