GCB executives can vote at WICB elections

Justice Diane Inshanally yesterday refused to grant an injunction filed by secretary of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) Anglea Haniff which sought to prevent two executives from the Guyana Cricket Board from voting at the West Indies Cricket Board elections which starts tomorrow and concludes on Thursday in Barbados.

Haniff, last week applied to the Court for an injunction to be granted seeking to prevent the GCB from sending representatives to the WICB elections.

The action listed as plaintiffs, Keith Foster, Anil Beharry, Hubern Evans, Julian Cambridge, Angela Haniff, Raymond Haniff, Romash Munna and Shabeer Baksh with the defendants being the executive members of the GCB.

Yesterday, attorney-at-law for the GCB Roysdale Forde told Stabroek Sport that Justice Diane Inshanally “refused to grant the injunction that the BCB had apllied for and instead made it inter partes, which means that there must be arguments from both sides.

“Having reviewed the matter the opinion was that the plaintiffs had no case and would not be granted the injunction without at least hearing the defendants,” Forde said.

Forde said that the GCB has been given until April 9 to file an affidavit in response to the one filed by Haniff in her capacity as secretary of the BCB.

Jamaican businessman and vice-president of the WICB Dave Cameron is challenging incumbent Dr Julian Hunte for the post of president of the WICB.

Cameron recently paid a visit to Guyana following which the GCB delayed the announcement of who they will be voting for.

However, president of the GCB, Drubahadur had reportedly told the Jamaican Star that the GCB had written the WICB indicating their desire for the status quo to remain unchanged.

“…..what I can tell you is this. Before Cameron declared that he was going to run, I had a written a letter to the president of the WICB, which was copied to all the directors.

“In this letter, we outlined what ideally our position was and that was for the status quo to remain for at least another two years,” Drubahadur was quoted as saying in the Jamaica Star online version.

Hunte is seeking a third as the WICB president.

Even before the GCB held its annual general meeting and election of office bearers, the WICB, following their Board of Directors meeting in January,  had announced that its board had approved Anand Sanase and Anand Kalkladeen as Directors of the WICB.

Meanwhile Cameron yesterday issued a statement to the West Indies Cricket Stakeholders and the media urging the voters to be accountable.

“My campaign for the post of President of the West Indies Cricket Board has been one premised on integrity and fair play. As a member of the cricket industry in this region, I would not support any attempt to bring the sport or its management into disrepute. I therefore wish to assure you, stakeholders that I am focused on making a difference in leadership.

My team and I are convinced that if given the chance, we will employ the necessary steps to rebuild and re-position cricket as the number one sport in the region. We all must play a part to make this work,” the statement ended.
