Just over one billion has been budgeted for sport in the 2013 budget which was presented to the National Assembly yesterday by Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh.
According to Dr. Singh in his budget presentation to parliament, $560 million is being requested for advancing work on the athletics track at Leonora; $52 million for the warm-up pool at the National Aquatic Centre at Pattenson on the East Coast of Demerara while an additional $300 million has been budgeted for the development and upgrade of sporting facilities and infrastructure nationwide.
“Once completed these facilities will constitute a significant addition to the stock of public facilities and infrastructure for sports development and sport activity,” said Singh.
The projects according to the budget estimates have been listed as critical under the National Sports Commission and as ongoing under the executing agency, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
Budget debates are set to commence on April 2, at 13 hours in the National Assembly.
