A 16-year-old was yesterday charged with murder and attempted murder stemming from the fatal Mashramani Day mob attack in the city that resulted in the death of a man and the wounding of his brother.
It is alleged that at Vlissengen Road, the teen murdered Kumar Mohabir. It was further alleged that at the same location, with intent to commit murder, he wounded Navindra Mohabir.
The young man was not required to plead to the indictable charges when they were read to him by Magistrate Judy Latchman.
His lawyer, Pamela Josiah, asked that her client be committed to a juvenile institution.
The magistrate, however, refused to grant the request and remanded the young man to prison.
His case will be called before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on May 16.
The teen is the second person to be charged after the attack. Last month, Devon Thomas, 19, was also arraigned on charges of murder and attempted murder. Thomas, whose address was given as 95 Better Hope South, East Coast Demerara, was remanded to prison.
The attack occurred on Vlissengen Road, between Barr Street and Shell Road, just after 7 pm. In a statement, the police said investigations revealed that Kumar went to a bar to make a purchase but he became involved in an argument with a group of men, during which he was stabbed about his body with broken bottles.
His brother, Navindra, 30, went to his assistance and was also repeatedly stabbed.
