Slingerz FC compliments of a Dwain Jacobs’ double in the forty fourth and sixty third minutes defeated Camptown FC 4-0 in a physical quarterfinal encounter of the Mayor’s Cup football competition played at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground Bourda on Tuesday.
Scrappy throughout the opening half, Jacobs capitalised on a poor defensive clearance by the Campbellville unit’s backline and confidently slotted home the opener inside the eighteen yard box to send the large crowd into loud celebrations.
Jacobs would add to his tally as a breakdown in the midfield area by the Camptown outfit resulted in the Slingerz captain intercepting the loose ball and unleashing a dipping shot from twenty four yards to complete his brace.
Struggling to fashion opportunities all evening, Camptown would be reduced to ten men as Lennox Charles was shown his second yellow card in the sixty eight minute for a dangerous challenge on Deon Alfred.
Further ‘under the pump’ due to their numerical shortcoming, Alfred would effectively put the game to bed through an absolute screamer of a strike in the seventy eight minute, cutting in from the right to let loose an effort that nestled into the top hand corner, leaving the goalkeeper with simply no chance.
Slingerz would complete the rout on the stroke of regulation time in the eighty ninth minute through a Quasey Mc Auley header, Mc Auley received a peach of a cross from the left side which he headed home clinically. Camptown would be handed further misery as Jermin Blue was shown his second caution of the vesper during stoppage time to complete a dismal performance by the Campbellville team.
In the opening encounter of the evening, Alpha United, propelled by an Anthony Abrams helmet trick in the third, thirty second, thirty ninth and seventy sixth minutes and a Manasseh Primo double in the eighty third and eighty fourth minutes crushed hosts GFC 8-0 to march into the semifinals.
Getting in on the action was Dwight Peter’s who scored in the seventeenth minute while an own goal by Gregory Denny in the sixty seventh minute highlighted the poor performance of the Bourda boys.
Quarterfinal action continues today at the GFC ground with two fixtures programmed to commence at 18:30hrs. The Jermin Fraser led Santos FC will take on Den Amstel while in the feature contest a youthful Fruta Conquerors will engage the always dangerous Guyana Defence Force in a keenly-anticipated contest.
