Officials at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) yesterday said that both ranks involved it the smash-up at Strathspey on Wednesday evening were fully conscious and improving.
Constable Curtis Europe, 28, and Corporal Ronald Beharry, 36, both of the Cove and John Police Station were rushed to the GPHC after they were involved in an accident which claimed the life of a third officer, Inspector Muhammed Iqbal Alli, 40, also of Cove and John Police Station.
The men were travelling east along the East Coast Highway when the car they were in slammed into a bridge at Strathspey.
Beharry was said to be non-responsive when he was taken to the hospital but had regained consciousness by yesterday. Europe, who suffered a fractured arm and head injuries was stable when he was brought in, and able enough to respond to relatives. However, hospital officials yesterday said that Europe was experiencing headaches and would have to be kept a while longer for observation.
Reports state that Europe and Beharry went to pick up Alli on Wednesday afternoon and were on their way to a “hangout spot.” It was, and still remains a mystery as to who was driving at the time of the accident since Europe, who was allegedly sitting in the rear of the car was flung into the front seats when the car ran into the bridge. Alli and Beharry were also displaced.
