First Lady Deolatchmee Ramotar presented three electrical fans to the New Amsterdam Prison to be installed in the recreational hall of the women’s prison.
The gift was in fulfilment of a promise the First Lady made to the inmates when she had lunch with them on International Women’s Day. Mrs Ramotar applauded the women for taking advantage of the opportunities made available to them during their incarceration.
The First Lady had also expressed pleasure at the talent the women displayed during the luncheon and presented a flat screen television set, a DVD player, microphone and music videos to them. She revealed that she had solicited help from her son Alexei, China Trading and Reaz Trading to procure the electronics.
The Officer-in-Charge of the New Amsterdam Prison, Superintendent Linden Cornette, thanked Mrs Ramotar the donation, noting that they were “timely, given the fact that the penal facility is now looking more towards its correctional aspect.” He also said the karaoke system would engage the women “during dormant periods of their confinement.”
