KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC-Aggressive opener Lendl Simmons says despite the loss of a number of leading frontline players Trinidad and Tobago are capable of victory over defending champions Jamaica when the two teams meet in the regional four-day championships this weekend.
Simmons, who played recently against the touring Zimbabweans, is one of four players who are expected to lead the twin-island republic’s charge.
The others are captain Dinesh Ramdin, fellow opener Adrian Barath, and new West Indies fast bowling sensation Shannon Gabriel.
“Jamaica is always a tough opposition, especially as it relates to playing them at their home,” said Simmons, who along with members of his team arrived in Jamaica on Wednesday.
“However, we are coming off two very good wins against Guyana and the Combined Campuses and Colleges, and are confident that we can come away with a positive result”.
Frontline players Dwayne Bravo, Sunil Narine, Ravi Rampaul, Kieron Pollard , Kevon Cooper and spinner Samuel Badree are unavailable due to their commitment to the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica play each other at Sabina Park starting tomorrow.
“We will first try to claim first innings,”Simmons explained.
“… and, if the opportunity presents itself, ( we will) then try and go for an outright win”.
Trinidad are second in the points table on 36 points, the same as Jamaica, but have a better net run rate.
The improved Windward Islands lead the standings with 48 points.
Trinidad and Jamaica will also square off in WICB Super50 action next week Thursday.
