The executive members of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) convened on Thursday and selected the best possible team to represent Guyana and return with a massive medal haul at the Pan American/ North American/ Caribbean Powerlifting Championships.
The three championships will be held simultaneously in Orlando, Florida from July 1-7.
According to a release, the following lifters have been selected to represent Guyana at the upcoming International Power lifting Championships which will be held simultaneously (i.e. One lift = 3 titles).
According to the GAPF, this represents a golden opportunity for the country’s power lifters as the expenses normally associated with attending three separate championships have now been combined into one single event.
The lifters selected are as follows, Gumendra Shewdas (53kg sub junior), Suraj Shewdas (59kg junior), Vijai Rahim (66kg junior), Winston Stoby (74ks Maters Two), Paul Adams (74kg Open), Randolph Morgan (83kg Open), Anis Thomas (83kg Open), Nairanjan Singh (83kg Masters Three), Karel Mars (105kg Open), John Edwards (120kg Master One), Colin Chesney (120kg Open).
Females: Dawn Barker (84+kg Open) and Kimberly Mars-Loncke (84kg Open).
The reserves are Fabian Ketwaroo, Kelvin Lewis, Rudolph Blackmon and Marvin Richards.
The team will also be accompanied by Edwin Spencer and Emmanuel Livan who will act in the capacity of coach and referee.
Lifters named are asked to contact Livan not later than April 3 with their passport particulars and embassy appointments for their visa requirements.
The manager of the team will be named shortly.
Guyana are the defending Caribbean Men Team Champions.
This year’s championships should be extremely tough with the inclusion of the combined events. The elite athletes named are expected to lead the team’s assault on the gold medals as well as improve on their 2012 international rankings.
