The ever improving ruggers from the University of Guyana (UG), bounced back from a humiliating loss last week against the Hornets to run away with a 19-17 victory against the rugged Guyana Defence Force (GDF) team yesterday despite Breon Walks’ theatrics.
After being schooled 36-7 by the Hornets, the students of Guyana’s highest learning institution turned the National Park into a lecture theatre for the soldiers and taught them the finer points of rugby.
Tries by the rampant Lance Adonis (ninth minute) and the speedy duo of Godfrey Broomes (12th minute in the second half) and Osei McKenzie (18 minute in the second half) enabled UG to brush aside GDF‘s team. Adonis also added conversions off his try and McKenzie’s to pad the score line.
Three tries by the swift, pint sized Walks, one in the first and the rest in the second half along with Cordell Carrington’s conversion was not enough for the more experienced soldiers to march off with a victory in the sea saw affair.
The students’ cohesive play along with improved confidence, better passing and converting scoring opportunities has steadily improved their game.
They will get several chances to further improve, starting next Saturday at the same venue when they tackle the Caribs.
Meanwhile in the curtain raiser of yesterday’s double header, the Caribs came from behind to earn a five-all draw against the star studded Hornets side.
An injury time try scored by Claude Alexander kept the Caribs from losing two straight after they went down to GDF 31-22, last week in the second official game of the season.
Jason Tyrell scored for the Hornets in the first half and neither Tyrell nor his celebrated teammates could mirror his achievement and propel his team to a victory in the very defensive game.
On Saturday there will be another double header at the same venue. The Hornets will take on GDF, while UG‘s young team will take on the Caribs.
