Food for the Poor donates to gastro-hit community

Food For The Poor (Guyana) Incorporated (FFTP) has donated 91 two-and-a half gallon water bottles and 360 pairs children’s croc shoes to the Ministry of Health to distribute to residents of in the North West District of Region 1 who recently suffered from an outbreak of gastroenteritis which claimed the lives of three children.

Kent Vincent, head of the non-governmental organisation, said that he was very happy to donate the water bottles and the footwear to the ministry to help in the control of disease.  He further stated that the organisation would always be willing to assist the ministry wherever possible.

Faye Jones, nurse attached to the Disease Control Section of the ministry, said she was pleased to receive the items on behalf of the ministry and stated that they would be of tremendous help to the residents of the North West District.

The request for the donation of footwear was made by Dr. Shamdeo Persaud, Chief Medical Officer, who had observed that children attended school barefoot.

Up to the third week of March, a total of 529 residents from the various communities of Port Kaituma were treated for gastroenteritis at health facilities in the area. That figure was reported by the Government Information Agency after a visit by a team that travelled to a total of eight communities, including Canal Bank, Sebai, Oronoque, Four Miles, Citrus Grove, and Mc Doom, in Region One, in response to the outbreak.
