Guyana’s Onika George on Saturday placed 10th in the girls’ 13 – 17 50m backstroke event on the first day of competition in the XXVIII CARIFTA Swimming Championships which continues today in Kingston, Jamaica.
George clocked 33.90s.
The final was won by Jamaica’s Agara Sinclair in 31.51s.
In yesterday’s 50m butterfly George once again had a hard time with the competition. George finished last in the preliminary event touching the wall in 35.33s.
George, who is Guyana’s sole competitor at the prominent regional affair will participate in her final event when she swims the 50m freestyle today.
Swimmers from over 20 countries across the Caribbean region were invited to have junior swimmers participate at the annual event.
In order to participate a swimmer had to make the qualifying time preset by the event organisers.
George earned her spot earlier this year when she swam a CARIFTA qualifying 33.31s in the 50m backstroke event.
Though qualifying only for the one event, George was allowed to participate in other events. This is George’s first time participating at the event.
