On a breezy Easter Sunday afternoon at the packed Port Mourant Turf Club, six year-old gelding, Scores Even, sent the turfites’ excitement high as kites, as he galloped across the finish line to claim the feature Guyana Cup Fever event.
In the ‘B’ and Lower 1500m race, the Simply Royal Stables product, which was ridden by jockey A. Richmond, took control of the race on the homestretch after an abysmal start and ran away from the field of 14 other horses to cart off the $2m first prize and the Banks DIH sponsored trophy.
Got To Go of Jumbo Jet Stables sped off with the $1m second prize while California Strike ridden by Jamaican jockey, Kevin Clarke had to settle for the $500,000 third place winnings. Got To Go’s stable mate Grande Roja pocketed the fourth place prize of $250,000.
In the co-feature, three year-old West Indies Bred 1200 (six furlongs) race, Its My Turn also of Jumbo Jet Stables guided by R. Drepaul crossed the finish line comfortably ahead of Ameera’s Joy who enjoyed the lead for most of the event before fading. Princess Alisha of Jumbo Jet ran in third.
Drepaul, who was adjudged yesterday’s champion jockey, also steered Serenity, of Jumbo Jet Stables to an emphatic victory in the Jumbo Jet 4 Year-Old Guyana and West Indies Bred Classic (1600 metres) event.
One million dollars went to Serenity for winning the race. Red Cloud and Rosetta, a stable mate of Serenity were the first and second runners up.
Jumbo Jet was unanimously declared the top stable of the yesterday’s Guyana Cup Fever.

G 3 and Lower (1200 metres) 1st Captain Crook, 2nd Summer Classic, 3rd Bridle Stone Corner.
A total of $20m was awarded to the top horses that competed yesterday.
Some major sponsors for yesterday’s event included Jumbo Jet Auto Sales, Banks DIH Limited, Shariff Racing Stables, Romell Jagroop General Contracting, Hand in Hand Insurance Company and Kanhai’s Guyana Electrical Agency.
Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee was in attendance.
The next horse racing event will be staged on April 14 at Bush Lot.
