Georgetown’s skies were a kaleidoscope of colours yesterday as kites in all shapes and sizes took flight.
Hundreds of families, including some from as far away as Linden, journeyed to the capital and took up spots at the National Park, on the seawalls and various grounds to fly their kites and have picnics for the Easter Monday holiday.
There were scores of bird-kites and box-kites in the air and one family that wanted something different opted for a black plastic bag kite. There were a few large kites in the air, which saw several persons having to anchor them so they wouldn’t get away. One familiar sight missing from this year’s Easter celebration, however, was the “Caddy Old Punch” kite as most kite-flyers favoured the bird kites.
The day allowed some fathers to be ‘heroes’ as they rescued tangled kites from trees and trenches. And while kite-flying was their main preoccupation, many children also made time to play games and sports, such as cricket and racquet ball. The older folks were seen playing cards and other games and catching up with their friends, though some could also be seen flying their kites as well.
Although there were a few showers, they did not stop persons from enjoying the day with their families. Music blared from cars and music sets, grills were being fired up and persons were enjoying the day and not minding the blazing heat. Some persons, who wanted to cool down, pitched tents and even hammocks.
