A teenager was yesterday remanded on a charge that he committed a multi-million-dollar armed robbery at the Electronics City store.
Sean Rodrigues, 17, of 71 Middle Road, La Penitence, was remanded to prison after denying the armed robbery charge read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Magistrate Judy Latchman heard that on March 30, at Electronic City, Sheriff Street, Rodrigues, while allegedly being armed with a gun, robbed Tiffany Peroune and Marti Kanhai of 35 cellular phones, valued at $10, 657,000.
No further details about what transpired on the day in question were related to the court.
Rodrigues’s attorney, Glenn Hanoman, asked the court to grant his client bail in a reasonable sum. He told the court that police held Rodrigues because a bag containing the stolen phones was found
a motorcar that he drives. He, however, claimed that his client is not a flight risk and that he is currently enrolled at the University of Guyana.
Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt objected to bail, citing the penalty attached to the offence if the defendant is found guilty and the type of weapon allegedly used to commit the robbery. Hunt also said he believes that if the teenager if granted bail might not return to court to stand trial.
The matter will be called again before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on April 17.
