A former police lance corporal was yesterday fined for obstructing the course of justice after she admitted to burning two firearm licence record books.
Magistrate Judy Latchman fined Edon Greene $160,000 with an alternative of serving 24 months in jail at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
“I would like to apologise to the members of the Guyana Police Force for embarrassing them all and my family,” Greene told the court, after she pleaded guilty to the charge of obstruction of justice.
According to the facts of the case, between July 28, 2012 and September 27, 2012, at Brickdam, with the intent to defeat the court of justice, Greene, 44, destroyed two firearm licence books in order to prevent them from being audited or certified of their accuracy.
Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt told the court that Greene was employed as a member of the Guyana Police Force at the time of the incident and she was attached to the firearms section of the ‘A’ Division Registry, at the Brickdam Police Station.
During the period, she was entrusted with firearm licence books to issue licences on behalf of the state. Hunt said checks were made and two of the books were unaccounted for and the defendant admitted to burning them.
Before the sentence was handed down, Greene told the court that she was a mother of three children and had no antecedents and she also apologised for her actions and the embarrassment she caused.
