Guyana stormed to a 46-run win against Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) shortly after lunch on yesterday’s fourth and final day of the West Indies Cricket Board’s Regional four-day competition at the Providence National Stadium yesterday.
It was the first outright win for the Guyanese and took them to 18 points for fifth place in the seven team tournament.
Jamaica and the Windward Islands occupy the top spot with 48 points followed by Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados on 36 points each.
The Combined Campuses and Colleges team following their outright defeat yesterday are on 12 points while the Leeward Islands who were also beaten outright by Barbados yesterday are in the cellar position on seven points.
Yesterday, the CCC side, resuming on their overnight score of 114-6 chasing 240 for victory were dismissed for 193.
They were indebted to a 51-run eight wicket stand between Raymon Reifer and Kevin Mc Clean.
Reifer top scored with 43 before edging a delivery from Steven Jacobs to Narsingh Deonarine at slip while Mc Clean made 40 before he too perished caught by Devendra Bishoo in the deep off the bowling of skipper Veerasammy Permaul.
Permaul ended with 4-22 off 17.1 overs while pacer Ronsford Beaton, Bishoo and Jacobs each picked up two wickets for 21, 41 and 45 runs respectively.
Guyana coach Esaun Crandon said he was impressed by the effort put forward by the team.
“I’m most of all impressed with how the boys put the entire negative past performances behind them and came out with the drive and determination to win at home in front their friends, family and supporters.
“They practiced and interacted a lot as a team and realized that we have a great team of players who are capable of winning all our matches, all we need is to go out there and do what we say we are going to do and today’s result was a result of that hard work,” Crandon added.
Crandon praised the bowlers and said the batsmen needed to build on the good stars they have been having.
“The battle was tough but the bowlers did exceptionally well. Our batsmen were decent but conversion seems to be an issue in the team while our lower order needs a lot of work as they were routed for less than 20 runs in both sessions,” he said.
“Our next game will be the 50 format and our approach will be a bit different. The guys will get a chance to play a bit more aggressively but will still maintain their discipline. We will be taking this momentum and confidence into our next game and will continue to bring our ‘A’ game,” he added.
Meanwhile, skipper Permaul also expressed his joy with the result.
“I’m happy with the result and the guys worked really hard for this win. We hope to carry this attitude into the next few matches and come out with a positive result,” he declared.
Asked about his personal performance he said: “I’m happy with my bowling form and I hope to get a few more wickets in the upcoming matches.”
Guyana will face the same team in a Super50 day/night game tomorrow at the Guyana National Stadium starting at 14:00hrs.
