A garbage collector was remanded to prison after he pleaded not guilty to accosting a woman and snatching her phone, when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Shevon Skeete, 31, is accused of stealing an LG cell phone valued $59,000 from the person of Loretta Rodrigues, on April 3 at Cornhill Street.
Skeete who was unrepresented by counsel pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny when it was read to him by Magistrate Sueanna Lovell.
In his defence, Skeete said, “Yuh worship, I wukking garbage fuh three years. I can’t believe this….she jus see me pun de road and seh I snatch she phone out she hand.”
Police Sergeant Alexis David-Hossanah told the court that on the day in question around 6.35pm, Rodrigues was walking along Cornhill Street when the defendant held on to her and took away her phone.
In response, the virtual complainant held on to Skeete and raised an alarm. David-Hossanah also said that the man was seen by two other persons while committing the act. The police were informed and the defendant was arrested and charged.
Skeete was ordered to appear in court on April 24.
