Teenage labourer Akeem Booker was yesterday fined $50,000 with an alternative of spending six months in jail after he pleaded guilty to a simple larceny charge.
Booker, 18, of East Ruimveldt, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, which heard that between April 1 and April 2, at East Ruimveldt, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Audrey Daniels and stole two belts, two caps, and a silver band, all totaling $19,000.
Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt said that at around 4pm on April 1, Daniels secured her home and left for the National Park.
She returned home around 1am on April 2 and discovered that her door was broken and the articles mentioned in the charges were missing. Hunt said that Daniels reported the matter to the police and Booker was later arrested and charged.
Booker pleaded guilty to stealing all the articles mentioned in the charge except for the silver band.
He also told the court that it was the second time he had been charged by the police.
Daniels, who told the court that Booker claimed he gave the stolen items to someone named ‘Robbie,’ said she wanted to be compensated for the articles. She only managed to recover two of the hats, which were found on Booker.
