LONDON (CMC) — Veteran West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul failed on debut for Derbyshire as the English County season got off to a quiet start today.
The 38-year-old left-hander, the side’s senior player, managed just 15 and it was left to tail-ender Tony Palladino to slam 68 from 110 balls to get the visitors up to 226 all out against title-holders Warwickshire at Edgbaston.
At the close, Warwicks were 14 without loss.
Coming to the wicket at 18 for two, Chanderpaul batted nearly 2-1/2 hours and faced 78 balls, putting on 38 for the third wicket with West Durston (32) and a further 49 for the fourth wicket with Dan Redfern (34).
He was fifth out, lbw to New Zealand off-spinner Jeetan Patel, who finished with three for 37.
At Canterbury, former West Indies left-hander Brendan Nash missed out on a half-century when he fell for 46, as Kent reached 333 for eight against Cardiff MCCU.
He faced 92 balls in 113 minutes at the wicket and struck seven fours, adding 95 for the third wicket with Mike Powell who got 62.
Nineteen-year-old Daniel Bell-Drummond, whose parents are Jamaican, pummelled his maiden first class century – an unbeaten 102.
In reply, Cardiff were 33 for one at the close.
Former West Indies captain Jimmy Adams currently serves as head coach at Kent.
At the Rose Bowl, Leicestershire, led by West Indies stroke-maker Ramnaresh Sarwan, were kept in the field as Hampshire reached 286 for four before rain and bad light ended play prematurely.
