Pro Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Dr. Prem Misir yesterday confirmed that the Bursar and Chief Accountant have been sent on leave without prejudice to facilitate an independent audit designed to analyze the institution’s financial deficit.
University of Guyana Bursar John Seeram and Chief Accountant Hazel Bentinck he said were sent on leave immediately until the completion of the audit of the institution’s accounts. However Misir said he could not say how long the two will be on leave as he did not know the timeframe for the audit.
Misir said that he had chaired a six-hour meeting on Saturday and it was agreed that the university will have a special audit “to find out how to fix the deficit that has persisted over several years”.
Further, he explained that in cases where the university has requested and received financial assistance from international bodies an audit would be done to illustrate how the finances were used.
He stressed that the decision to have the audit had nothing to do with financial impropriety.
