The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Gym was declared the top gym and Republican’s Septon Barton was awarded the best boxer trophy when the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) brought the curtains down on its National Novices Championships on Sunday.
At the three-night open air competition which was staged at the National Gymnasium,Barton shone the brightest among the upcoming stars of boxing, gaining first round knockout victories over his two opponents, GDF gym mates, Kevin Ting-A-Kee and Stephon Mangra.
By virtue of copping the best boxer award, Barton also won the best boxer trophy in the lightweight division.
His gym mate, Kevin Rodney was awarded the best boxer in the middleweight category.
Other categorical winners were Tyrone Lashley (junior flyweight) of Rose Hall Jammers (RHJ), Wincel Thomas Jr. (bantamweight) of GDF, Kellon King (junior welterweight) of Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) and GDF gym mates, Linden Daniels (welterweight), Desmond Amsterdam (light heavyweight) and Sean Phillips (GDF).
Akesia Arokium (RHJ) was also in the winner’s row. She defeated GDF’s Candacie Benjamin.
GDF amassed a total of 13 points followed by FYF (five), Republican (four points) and Rose Hall Jammers in the cellar with two points.
Over 60 boxers competed at the championships.
