Last Friday, over 150 persons, including children and senior citizens benefited from a Health Ministry’s outreach clinic at the St. Cuthbert’s Mission Health Centre.
The previous week, a similar outreach was held at the Love and Faith Church, in Sophia, where over 200 persons benefited.
A release from the Government News Agency (GINA) said that Visual Inspection using Acetic Acid (VIA) screening for cervical cancer, eye testing and dental care were among the services provided. The team of health professionals from Georgetown consisted of a dentist, dentex, dental assistants, refractionist [a person trained to measure the refraction of the eye and to determine the proper corrective lenses] and VIA providers. The team delivered care and treatment to the persons present at the outreach clinics.
GINA said that in St. Cuthbert’s Mission, approximately 102 persons benefited from dental services such as extractions and filling of teeth and prophylaxis treatment. The dental team headed by Dr. Collin Lee comprised of staff of the Cheddi Jagan Dental Centre.
Thirty persons including two children had their eyes tested, 19 of whom require prescription glasses while 22 women benefited from VIA testing, five of whom showed signs of pre-cancerous lesions and were provided with immediate treatment.
The release said that at the outreach clinic the previous week at the Love and Faith Church in Sophia, over 200 persons benefited from similar care and treatment. That outreach successfully provided 67 persons with dental care, 68 had their eyes screened, over 50 HIV tests were conducted, and 28 women were screened with the VIA method for cervical cancer.
