Local conglomerate Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) under its Gatorade and Pepsi brands will continue to replenish pugilists competing in the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Under 16 tournaments after renewing their sponsorship deal Wednesady.
After partnering with the association last year to box off three successful tournaments, one in Berbice and two in Georgetown, DDL will once again brand and sponsor this year’s three upcoming competitions scheduled for June, August and December.
“DDL under our Pepsi and Gatorade brands will once again partner with the Guyana Boxing Association for the second annual under 16 tournaments” said Larry Wills, the company’s Brand Executive for Gatorade and Pepsi.
“Based on what was done last year it was an easy decision to continue to support the youths because we know the youths in boxing have a lot of talent and we want to help them showcase their talent,” Wills added during the media briefing yesterday at Distribution Service Limited.
“This tournament acts as a nursery so at the senior levels they would know what is necessary over the past year, sport in Guyana especially boxing is developing and we are glad to be aiding in their development”.
Wills wished the GBA a successful tournament and stated that the young boxers will be kept hydrated with Gatorade and Pepsi when the tournaments box off on June 29-30 in Georgetown, August 15-16 in Berbice and December 21-22 perhaps in Linden or West Demerara.
December’s venue is yet to be decided but according to GBA’s president, Steve Ninvalle, the last competition will most likely be staged in Linden as part of decentralizing the sport.
Ninvalle who noted that he would like to see DDL’s and the GBA partnership to continue for “many years to come” thanked DDL and stating. “We are very heartened by this stance DDL has taken and it shows us that some members of the corporate community are listening to our requests for assistance, I do hope this continues for many years to come”. GBA’s president also added that at the end of the three tournaments the possibility exists of staging champions versus champions’ competition.
DDL will also outfit each boxer with ring attire for all three events.
