This evening, the Indian Cultural Centre screens Chak De! India at its Lot 67 New Haven, Bel Air location.
According to a press release, this 2007 film was directed by Shimit Amin and tells the story of Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) a disgraced ex-captain of the Indian Hockey Team who is forced out of his home by angry neighbours. Circumstances find him trying to coach a women’s hockey team which is disunited by different prejudices. Kabir has to find a way to unite the team and to get the women working together. The team manages to overcome several obstacles, including the prejudice against women in sports, to go on to win a major international match.
One critic said “…Chak De India is an outright winner. A triumph of the spirit.” The film won eight Best Film awards
