A total of 36 motorcycles were detained and several persons arrested over various offences after the police conducted an operation at the Georgetown seawall in the light of an upsurge of armed robberies in that area.
Police said in a press release yesterday that during the operation which took place on Sunday, the motorcycles were detained, three men were arrested for carrying offensive weapons, one man arrested for possession of narcotics and two men for failing to wear safety helmets while driving their motorcycles.
Investigations are in progress, the release said.
Following the stabbing to death of an alleged robber earlier this month, Persaud had acknowledged that the regular occurrence of attacks on the seawall was an area of concern for the police force.
“We have been noticing this for a while,” he said, while adding that foot patrols have begun not only on the seawall but also in the National Park to address the problem.
