Two men were early yesterday morning shot outside Baroombar on North Road and according to Crime Chief Seelall Persaud, one of the men, a security guard at the adult entertainment bar, was the target.
Persaud told Stabroek News that the motive for the attack was unclear but based on what investigators have gathered the gunmen were after Troy Adams, 40, of Norton Street, Georgetown.
He explained that the other man, who police in a press release identified as Ian Sampson, 32, a taxi driver of East La Penitence, Georgetown was “hit by accident”.
According to Persaud, Adams is responsible for, among other duties, keeping watch over vehicles belonging to patrons. He said that while he was doing so two men wearing ski masks approached Adams who immediately started to run. He said that it was at this point that the men opened fire.
Police in their press release said that the shooting occurred at Camp Street and North Road, a few yards away from Baroombar. According to the release, around 00:45 hrs, Adams was confronted by two men armed with handguns.
“The men discharged rounds in his direction hitting him to his back as he tried to escape,” the release said adding that Sampson who was standing by his motor vehicle in the vicinity sustained a gunshot wound to the right shoulder.
The injured men have been admitted to hospital for medical treatment. Investigations are in progress.
Stabroek News made attempts to speak to Adams in hospital but a nurse told this newspaper that it was not possible as he was receiving treatment.
An attempt to speak with the management of Baroombar was also futile.
Meanwhile, the police said in the same release that they are investigating a report that on Saturday a licensed firearm holder entered a house at Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara, where he confronted a group of men in relation to the alleged larceny of articles from his premises. An argument developed during which the licensed firearm holder is reported to have discharged several rounds hitting Courtney Moore, 30; and Ralph Paul, 43, both of Land of Canaan, in their right shoulders, the release said.
The injured men have been admitted to the hospital for medical treatment, while the licensed firearm holder is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
The Crime Chief told Stabroek News that charges will soon be laid against the man who is the owner of a sawmill.
