The first NBSF was played from June 26-30, 2006 involving 18 schools in a single elimination format. From its inception the NSBF has been a joint venture between the NSC and YBG to develop a structured National Schools Basketball Championship.
Presently the initiative has grown to almost 50 schools participating first for ranking in five separate regional tournaments and qualification for the national championships.
National titles are contested at the U14, U17, U20 and girls developmental levels.
The tournament is also used to indentify players for the Junior Elite programme which will afford them the opportunity to be selected for the Inter-Guiana Games.
The NSBF is recognized as the National School Basketball Championships of Guyana.
