A man who cuffed and kicked his niece was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment after he was charged with unlawful wounding, when he appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Eon Gibson, 26, of 65 East Ruimveldt was accused of unlawfully and maliciously wounded Keisha Gibson on April 21, at East Ruimveldt.
He was unrepresented by a lawyer at his court hearing yesterday.
He offered an explanation for his actions.
Gibson told the court that he asked his niece (Keisha) to rinse out some dirty clothes that she had soaked down for days in a bucket but she refused to do it and ran away.
He related that Keisha had burst his mouth and that some other family members were approaching him with a ‘jooker’ and he had to defend himself so he used his knees to hit Keisha several times to her head until he started to see blood.
Gibson also stated that he was never charged or convicted before.
Keisha’s medical indicated that she had suffered multiple lacerations of 2 cm to 3 cm on her face for which she received stitches.
Magistrate Latchman after hearing his explanation entered a not guilty plea for him.
The prosecutor, Police Lance Corporal Jomo Nichols said the defendant and the virtual complainant (VC) reside at the same address. He said that on the day in question they had a misunderstanding over some dirty clothes in a bucket. The accused became annoyed and started to cuff and kick the complainant.
Gibson was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 but he asked the magistrate to impose a sentence on him since he has no one to post bail for him.
The magistrate then re-read the charges to Gibson and he pleaded guilty.
He was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment.
