A couple was yesterday released on $40,000 bail each, after they were charged with the possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
It is alleged that on April 23, Lloyd Sadloo and Angela Blackman of Lot 6 Quamina Street, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, had in their possession, 10 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
They both pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The prosecutor, Police Corporal Seon Blackman stated that on the day in question, policemen from the narcotics branch, acting on information, went to the home of the defendants. A search was conducted and the narcotics were found on a chest of drawers.
Blackman added that the accused were shown the narcotics and Sadloo admitted to ownership, while Angela Blackman denied ownership. He said they were arrested and told of the offence and the drugs which were weighed in their presence at the station, amounted to 10 grammes.
They were subsequently granted bail in the sum of $50,000 each.
Sadloo begged the magistrate to be lenient and reduce the bail since he could not afford to post that sum.
They were subsequently granted a reduction to $40,000 each.
The case will be called again at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court on May 30.
