Ursula Victoria Forbes celebrated her 102nd birthday yesterday surrounded by family and friends who flocked her Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara home.
A service was held early in the morning to celebrate her milestone and a party later in the afternoon. She was born on April 24, 1911 in Den Amstel and spent almost all of her life there.
Up until a few years ago, she was travelling to the United States to be with her children and other relatives who reside there.
The last time she travelled was at the age of 99, and said that she preferred to live in Guyana. Her eldest daughter Doreen decided to return with her and has been caring for her ever since.
Mother Forbes as she is known to many in the community is famous for her cooking skills which she gained from the Carnegie School of Home Economics. She even told Stabroek News that she used to cook for the late president Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham.
Apart from her hearing loss, she is very alert for her age. She spends most of her days reading the Daily Word and newspapers and watching death announcements.
