The Guyana Musical Arts Festival 2013 opens on Monday at 20:00 hrs at the National Cultural Centre.
A release from the festival office said that the local patron, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony will declare the festival open.
The biannual festival will include musical renditions on instruments including steel pans and drums,vocal solos and choral performances, dramatic poetry and verse speaking.
Competitions will be held in 42 children’s classes; 16 adult classes and 6 classes open to all ages. Following the official launch, the classes will commence with the church choirs.
The following day the classes will continue from 15:30 hrs and 20:00 hrs at the National Cultural Centre. There will be no classes on May 1, a public holiday.
From May 2, the festival will move to the Regency Suites, Hadfield Street where classes will continue daily from 15:30 hrs and 20:00 hrs until May 3, 2013. On May 4 there will be an additional session of classes from 09:00 hrs in addition to the 15:30 hrs and 20:00 hrs’ ones. On that final evening winners will be announced and prizes and certificates presented.
The festival is a collaboration between the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the Guyana Musical Arts Festival Inc, the Guyana Music Teachers Association and the Lutheran Church in Guyana.
Its overseas patron is Dr Erv Jannsen, Coordinator Music Education Programme, Partners in Mission with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Guyana. The adjudicators are Don Ryan, Marilynda Lynch and Dr Joyce Jonas.
