Cyclists are set to pedal off this Sunday in the Mining Town as the Guyana Sports Development Foundation (GSDF) in collaboration with the Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club hosts the second edition of the Baker Memorial Cycling Classic from 10:00 hrs in the Amelia’s Ward Cycling Circuit.
The Classic which is sponsored by Banks DIH opens the Linden cycling season with a wide variety of races for clubs in Guyana, revealed Colin Baker President of the GSDF.
Riders will be competing for over $250,000 in trophies and incentives at the event which promises to attract most of the top athletes in cycling such as Robin Persaud, Warren ‘40’ McKay, Alonzo Greaves, Walter Grant Stuart, Geron Williams and Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams.
The youths and juniors will be in action in BMX races in the 6-9, 9-12 and 12-14 years old categories. The juniors will also showcase their skills and talent in the Racing Cycle and Mountain Bike categories.
Races for the ladies promise to provide much excitement for the large crowd of spectators expected for this festive event.
The veterans who have kindled and kept the flame of cycling burning in the Linden community will be have several races to demonstrate their continued commitment to the sport. The team trial event will renew the age old competition between teams representing clubs from Linden and Georgetown.
Baker disclosed that the Classic will honour the memory of Joseph and Adelaide Baker and Marion Katanga, the parents and sister respectively of one of Linden’s prominent cycling families.
