One of the Chinese ferries, the Kanawan, was put out of commission on Wednesday night following a collision with a barge which had lost power and drifted into it at Parika.
According to reports, this left scores of travellers without a service to the newly-built stelling at Good Hope on the Essequibo Coast.
Speaking to the Stabroek News yesterday, Minister of Works Robeson Benn said that as a result of the collision, the Parika to Supenaam service lost a round trip.
He said the service was restored to normalcy by the evening of Thursday.
Benn said too that a marine surveyor is examining the damage and repairs done to determine whether further work would be needed.
The Kanawan, along with its sister vessel the Sabanto, was gifted to Guyana by China in 2011.
However, because of difficulties in the completion of the retrofitting works to both the Parika and Good Hope stellings, the ferries were only put into operation some 10 months after they were brought to Guyana.
