Ronald Wong, who was charged with raping a woman at Kara Kara, Linden, was found not guilty and freed in the High Court on Friday.
Wong was on trial before Justice Navindra Singh and a 12-member mixed jury. The jury returned with the unanimous verdict after a short deliberation over the evidence, which included the testimonies of the victim and a sworn statement from the accused.
The case against Wong was that he raped the woman after he picked her up on a bicycle and took her to a house on May 30, 2000.
But Wong disputed this claim in his defence before the court. He said that he was innocent of the charge and that he and the woman had a relationship. He was represented by defence counsel Peter Hugh, while Renita Singh and Rhondel Weever led the prosecution.
