The Association of Regional Chambers of Commerce (ARCC) in Guyana said that the slashing of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) budget will have serious repercussions on business and commerce should power failures begin.
In a release, the ARCC said that the reduction of GPL’s budget will create economic hardship for Guyanese. In order to foster development, it said, Guyana requires a stable power supply and it is necessary that the government continues to find effective ways to ensure this reaches every citizen.
The ARCC also said that citizens are already faced with challenges, and raising GPL tariffs, experiencing more blackouts and increasing the energy cost to the production sectors will contribute to hardship.
Members of the opposition were therefore urged by the regional chambers to review the situation as a priority.
