The Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) has announced that for the first time Trinidadian artistes, including a dance group and two singers, will perform at this year’s main activities to commemorate the 175th anniversary for Indian arrival in Guyana.
The Premala Dance Academy, along with chutney singers, Rakesh Yankeran and Hemlata Dindyal, from Trinidad and Tobago will perform at the events. The dance academy is one of the leading ones in T&T, while the artistes are considered legends in chutney and Taan singing.
The IAC said in a release that the annual Mela will be held on Sunday May 5 at the Anna Regina car park and on Monday May 6 at the Albion Community Centre Ground; admission to both events are free.
The recognising of outstanding Indo-Guyanese who have dedicated much of their lives for the development of Guyana will also be done at the events the IAC said.
In addition to these two events, a “choka” fest will also be held on May 12 at the Guyana International Con-ference Centre. The release also said that the fest will be a unique food festival, where for the first time Guyanese would be given the opportunity to savour various “chokas” with “sada” and “paratha” roti among the numerous side dishes.
The IAC is also inviting suggestions from the general public on various types of “chokas” that can be made in addition to potato, coconut, baigan (eggplant), tomato and those made from various fishes.
