A Middleton Street, Camp-bellville man was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with the possession of ammunition, when he made an appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Steve King, 27, of Lot 50 Middleton Street, denied the allegation which stated that on April 27, at Brickdam he had in his possession two 9mm live rounds and two 9mm spent shells without being the owner of a firearm licence.
The charges were read to him by Magistrate Judy Latchman.
Attorney-at-law Peter Hugh in his bail application asked that King be released on bail since he has a fixed place of abode. He added that his client is a real estate agent and he has one pending matter before the court of a different nature (alleged fraud).
Noting that the ammunition was found in a car, Hugh further stated that the car was parked on Brickdam and there were two occupants inside the vehicle. He stated that King was not the owner of the car and he was not in the car when it was searched.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Vishnu Hunt objected to bail saying that the reasons put forward to the court by counsel were contrary to the prosecution’s facts. He pointed out also the seriousness of the offence and the punishment it attracts if the defendant is found guilty.
Hunt further stated that counsel did not provide the court with any special reasons as to why the defendant should be released on bail.
The matter continues on May 17.
