The Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) in collaboration with the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, the Bartica Islamic Association and the religious community of Bartica hosted a meeting on Tuesday to address the trafficking in persons (TIP) issue which is affecting the Bartica and neighbouring communities.
According to a press release from the CIOG, the object of the engagement was to sensitise religious and community leaders, their constituents and other stakeholders about the dangers of trafficking in persons, and the importance of getting involved in stamping it out.
Head of the TIP Unit at the Ministry of Human Services Tricia Watson and Deputy Permanent Secretary at the ministry Patrick Findlay made presentations, after which community members community offered suggestions and sought clarification on several matters pertaining to TIP, the release said.
The meeting was chaired by CIOG Director of Education Shaykh Moeenul Hack and saw attendance by representatives of the CIOG, Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, leader of the Christian Churches of Bartica, officers of the Guyana Police Force based at Bartica and the Regional Chairman among others.
The release said the CIOG sees its role as complimenting that of the government in ensuring that this scourge is removed from our country. Another meeting is scheduled for May 11, and will take the form of a workshop; it will be hosted by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.
