A young Georgetown designer escaped serious injuries though he was struck by a car that after a truck ran into it at Fort Wellington, West Coast Berbice yesterday afternoon.
The accident occurred at around 1pm after Andy Cummings, 20, of Sophia, had just disembarked from the car, HC 1633, and was removing his bags from the trunk. He was hit and suffered bruises about the body and he was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital, where he was treated and discharged.
At the time, Cummings, the Designers’ Portfolio winner for 2012, was delivering African and Amerindian outfits he had designed for an Arrival Day pageant at the Regional Democratic Council (RDC).
Timothy De Abreu, driver of the truck, GMM 5588 that was registered to N. Singh of Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, said he saw a canter speeding into his path and he was trying to “save the canter and save myself” when the accident occurred.
Cummings recalled seeing the canter trying to overtake a bus on the turn. He said the truck swerved to avoid it and “the driver applied brake and skidded on the wet road.”
The truck then hit the car, which spun around and struck Cummings, who was flung up in the air and fell. He said his laptop fell out from a bag in hand and got damaged.
