Region Five celebrated Arrival Day yesterday in grand style with several schools and groups participating in cultural activities including African and Indian dancing, drumming and dramatic poetry.
The event, the first of its kind to be hosted in the region, promoted cultures from the six ethnic groups and showcased local talent.
Special guest, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony acknowledged the contribution of the nation’s forbears to the liberties the populace enjoys today. Other special invitees included attorney-at-law Tejnarine Ramroop; Metro branch manager, Avia Lindie; Asquith Hamilton, former engineer at Guyana Water Inc and contractor Neibert Rodney, and former regional officer, Neibert Rodney who comprised the judging panel for the pageant.
Four students from Bush Lot Secondary put their school on the map; winning the first and third prizes of a computer system and fan in a cultural competition. The first pair was crowned king and queen for their depiction of Chinese immigrants. This was followed by a duo displaying African attire who won second place, and another couple from Bush Lot secondary who placed third for their depiction of Europeans.
The winners were sashed and awarded trophies, bouquets and hampers containing body products while the other participants were given tokens of appreciation. Fort Wellington Secondary also won the second place prize of a DVD player.
The activities were sponsored by Metro Office and Computer Supplies, Regal Stationary and Computer Centre, G. Singh Engineering, Jumbo Jet Auto Sales and Contractor James Nicholson.
